Period lighting – a few vintage hanging light fixtures in the kitchen can go a long way towards the vintage look.  Real lighting fixtures from the early 19th Century are available on the second hand market – just make sure you have them rewired for safety.  Actual kitchen lighting would have been nickel plated fixtures with simple shades.  With that type of simplicity, they can fit it any décor.  Fancy, antique chandeliers belong in the dining room, not the kitchen.

kitchen countertops budget

kitchen countertops budget Can you paint your countertop?  Of course…you can pretty much paint anything.  What you need to do is use a primer to make the paint stick to the surface properly.  I certainly wouldn’t recommend painting over granite or marble countertops, but if you have a hideous laminate with scars and stains, consider a paint makeover.

  • You’ll need to rough up the surface and make it smooth to help the paint stick to it.  Lightly sand with fine grit sandpaper.
  • Wipe down to remove all dust and any dirt.
  • Paint with a quality primer such as Kilz – make sure it is appropriate for non-porous surfaces.
  • Apply 2-3 coats of glossy paint or a faux finish – how about getting those fancy marble countertops through a faux finish!
  • Allow to dry thoroughly, at least 24 hours.
  • Apply several coats of polyurethane to seal the deal.

Solution
A more modern layout that incorporates an eat-in kitchen bar with side shelving, appliance center with ample pantry storage, glass-front cabinets, bright red tile countertops, and colorful wallpaper. The approximate cost (excluding new appliances) was less than $5,000.
Homeowner Cheryl Kees of Pensacola, Florida, who is also a kitchen designer, said she saved money by using ceramic tile on the countertops rather than a solid-surface material. "Tile is a little more expensive than laminate, but there are so many more design options." She also notes that a walk-in pantry is often less expensive than additional custom built-in cabinetry. Cheryl recycled old fir doors that she bought for $150 to serve as the entrance to the pantry.

  • You don't have to spend a lot of money to give your kitchen some visual appeal.Instead of painting, wrap your kitchen in a lively wallpaper, and go from dull to dazzling. Wallpaper in a small kitchen makes a strong design statement. (Tip: You can often get great deals on discontinued patterns. It's a good idea to buy a couple of extra rolls.)
  • A pot rack adds style while meeting a vital need in a small kitchen. It's a good idea to store larger pots and those you use most often above your stove or over an island.
  • If your kitchen floor is less than lovely, then put down an inexpensive sisal or sea grass rug. It adds a decorative textural element, feels comfortable under your feet, and is easy to change or clean
  • Simple window treatments will give a kitchen a more finished look. A valance or sheer panel adds style without blocking natural light.http://www.southernliving.com/home-garden/solutions/kitchen-remodel-budget-00400000006293/

Choose the Type of Wood

You can choose to match the existing finish of the cabinets, or refinish the frames and cabinet walls before you put on the new doors. Solid wood doors in walnut, cherry or pecan are the most expensive, while oak doors will be in a mid-range budget. Cedar and poplar are good choices for inexpensive cabinet doors.

Select a Finish for the Doors

If you wish to paint the doors a solid color, the wood choice is not so important. For stains and varnishes, select a color as close as possible to the original cabinet framing. If you have the old doors, take one with you to the building supply center to match a stain or varnish. You will enhance the overall appearance of your kitchen by taking care with this selection process.
